Tips for a Smooth Installation

By Felipe Lerida, CPSGT

After being an installation coordinator at Sleepvirtual for the past three years, I have come to terms with Murphy’s law which states “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. I believe one of the most crucial points for any startup lab has definitely got to be the initial installation and training phase for any new Sleep equipment. A smooth installation can make all the difference for a startup lab during its beginning stages, since it’s when everyone is still getting situated and referrals are just starting to come in.

Below are a few tips to guarantee a smooth installation and avoid common mistake:

1. Establish a direct line of communication with the installation coordinator right after purchase. This will eliminate any unnecessary back and forth between the sales rep and installer.

2. Suggest immediately after purchase a desired or suggested installation date. This will increase your chances of getting your preferred date, which is very important since most installers are booked a few weeks in advance.

3. Convey important information directly to installer ahead of time.
- Type of auxiliary devices (CPAP, Capnography)
- Cabling requirements *Check if cabling is included or outsourced*
- IT integration

4. Confirm that all required furniture and supplies are ready for your facility. Having all the furniture and auxiliary devices onsite will ensure a complete and operational installation.

5. Arrange for staff to be devoted 100% to the software and hardware training for as long as is required. This will assure that staff members are available and ready to learn the new system being implemented.

6. Coordinate with reading physician ahead of time:
- Montages
- Template reports
- Recording protocol
- Method of transfer and archiving of data
- Reading station requirements

7. Run a test patient while the installer is onsite! This is extremely important, this will guarantee hands on experience while someone is onsite and it will also ensure that there are no issues post installation.

8. Ensure a form of contact between staff members and 24/7 tech support team.

Following these easy tips will greatly increase your overall customer satisfaction and help make the beginning stage that much easier. Good luck on your next installation!
