The Impact of Social Media on the Field of Sleep Medicine

Sleep Tech Tip of the Week

By Michael Miller, RPSGT

As a greenhorn to the contribution of positive and valuable social media content as it relates to the field of sleep medicine, I am enamored with the amount of interesting and relevant information available today for our once unfamiliar field. When I first entered the field thirteen years ago, there was limited resource and education material, and social media was virtually unheard of.

Thanks to the efforts of the BRPT, AASM, AAST, Binarysleep, Local and State Sleep Societies, and Facebook loyalist such as Randy Townsend, we now have a wealth of information and resource material for sleep professionals and the people we treat. I recently learned that Mr. Randy Townsend, RPSGT has been invited by the BRPT to speak about this very topic at the upcoming BRPT Symposium in Denver, CO on September 23rd – 25th. Needless to say I am excited about hearing a dedicated professional like Randy speak about the importance of social media on the field of sleep medicine.

My employer, Neurovirtual/Sleepvirtual, made the decision to become a publisher of social media content at the beginning of the year. This decision was made for two primary reasons: the first reason was to payback the field of sleep medicine that has been so vital to my personal success as well as for the success and growth of Neurovirtual/Sleepvirtual as a whole; the second reason that lead to our decision was to maximize our visibility in the competitive industry in which we operate.

Since becoming involved with publishing social media content I have had the pleasure of witnessing many of its benefits. For example, I have observed sleep labs such as Sleep EZ Diagnostic Center use Facebook as a tool to interact with their patients in the 24/7 internet environment. I have also experienced success in gaining brand recognition for my company Neurovirtual/Sleepvirtual.

Below, I have included a list of links and available web pages for anyone interested in discovering the benefits of social media and the impact they have made on the field of sleep medicine.
